ASHA online communities offer exciting new possibilities to SIG 7 members.
I hope that this edition of Perspectives finds all of you well and in fine form. If you have visited the ASHA website recently, you will have noticed some interesting changes, a number of which are very appealing for the Special Interest Groups (SIGs). ASHA Communities are an important new feature of the website. Currently, I am a member of four different ASHA communities: Audiology, Research, SIG Coordinators and Associate Coordinators, and SIG 7: Aural Rehabilitation and its Instrumentation. Presently, SIG 7 has 264 affiliates. This venue offers a great opportunity to interact with ASHA members who have similar professional interests. Members can easily identify specific individuals within the community or people from a specific geographic area by sorting the member-list by city, state, or country of residence. The Communities also make it possible to post announcements or documents that will be accessible to all community members. Perhaps more interestingly, the Communities make it possible to have online group discussions. This replaces the e-mail lists that previously existed on the ASHA website. However, the new online communities are much more enjoyable to use.
